Die Hel is a remote valley in the Swartburg Mountains of the south-western Cape. White people first settled there in the latter part of the last century. They left the valley only twice a year when they took a caravan of donkeys over the mountains to the nearest town, Prince Albert, to trade the fruit they grew.
