Zanele Muholi
Zanele Muholi is a South African visual activist and photographer. Muholi’s self-proclaimed mission is ‘to re-write a black queer and trans visual history of South Africa for the world to know of our resistance and existence at the height of hate crimes in SA and beyond’. Muholi is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in London and an Honorary Professor at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. They have won numerous awards including Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, the ICP Infinity Award for Documentary and Photojournalism, and the Africa’SOut! Courage and Creativity Award. Some recent exhibitions include: Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness at Autograph ABP, London; Masihambisane – On Visual Activism at Performa, New York; and Zanele Muholi: Homecoming at Durban Art Gallery. Muholi’s publications include Somnyama Ngonyama, Hail the Dark Lioness; Faces and Phases; and Only Half the Picture.
