Shen Congwen (1902 – 1988) was a Chinese writer. His works include The Border City, The Long River, The Lamp of Spring and Black Phoenix. His work has been translated into nine languages.
‘Shen’s novels, which had him often referred to as the Chinese William Faulkner, had a pastoral quality that did not serve a political purpose.’
