Lewis Thomas (1913-1993) was President Emeritus of the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center, New York. His last recent book was The Fragile Species (1992). Other works include Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler’s Ninth Symphony (Viking, 1983) and Et Cetera, Et Cetera: Notes of a Word-Watcher (Little Brown, 1990).
