José Donoso (1924-1996) was the author of seven novels, including The Obscene Bird of Night. He lived in exile from Chile after the overthrow of Allende, but returned in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996. ‘The Country House’ (Granta 9) is taken from Casa de Campo (The Country House), which was published in 1984.
‘It was the season when unwholesome rumours were bred spontaneously, as life breeds in stagnant waters gone foul.’
