Joan Jara (b. 1927) was the wife of Victor Jara, the popular and influential Chilean singer of folk and political songs. She lived in Chile until 1973, when Salvador Allende was overthrown in a military coup led by General Pinochet. ‘September 11, 1973’ (Granta 9) was included in her book, Victor (Jonathan Cape, 1983).
‘Victor was due that morning to sing at the Technical University, at the opening of a special exhibition about the horrors of civil war and fascism where Allende was going to speak.’
