Derek Walcott (1930–2017) was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. In addition to receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992, he was also the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Grant, a Royal Society of Literature Award, and, in 1988, the Queen’s Medal for Poetry. He was an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
