David Haynes was born in St Louis, Missouri, in 1955. He graduated from Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota, and went on to teach full-time for twenty years. He now works for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Washington, DC, though his home is in St Paul. He has published five novels, including Somebody Else’s Mama in 1995, as well as a series of books for children and a play. In 1996 he was selected as one of Granta‘s Best Young American Novelists.
