my apartment is neither over
nor under the sidewalk,
but both at once
I can see knees passing by
but no faces
I can see the wheels of cars
but no cars
at times I may make bold choices:
if I perch upon the back of a chair
then I am fully above;
if I lie flat on the floor
to watch the shadows on the ceiling,
then I am fully below
but most often,
I am simply between,
and in this way I learn to live either above
or beneath the moments of my life,
but never within them
