Dan Bird | Granta

Dan Bird

Editor

I joined Granta in July 2019. Initially working as part of Granta’s campaigns team, I moved into the editorial department in 2021. My role as Editor is varied – I commission, edit and publish a handful of titles each year, as well as assisting on other edits, and responding to submissions. I also support the publishing director and editorial team more broadly. Prior to joining Granta, I worked at Waterstones, as both a bookseller and events coordinator. Alongside this, I completed an MA in Contemporary Literature at Queen Mary University of London. My favourite book in translation: The Vegetarian by Han Kang (translated by Deborah Smith). It is violent, hypnotic and exquisitely crafted – an exploration of both desire and misogyny that spirals into a profound meditation on species and the metamorphosis of ‘the human’ into new forms. The books I always recommend: Olga Ravn’s The Employees, Fernanda Melchor’s Hurricane Season, Didier Eribon’s Returning to Reims, Patrick Radden Keefe’s Empire of Pain, N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season and Percival Everett’s The Trees, to name a few.
