Penelope Fitzgerald was born in 1916 and died in 2000. The story ‘Our Lives Are Only Lent To Us’, published in Granta 74, was discovered after her death and was later included in an expanded paperback edition of her short-story collection, The Means of Escape. She won the Booker Prize in 1979 for her third novel, Offshore, and the American National Book Critics Circle Award in 1997 for The Blue Flower.
‘The two cultures are complementary but in the way that death is to life.’
