Pat Barker was born in Teesside in 1943. Her father was killed in action during the Second World War, and she was bought up mainly by her grandmother. In 1983 she was named as one of Granta’s ‘Best of Young British Novelists’, with an extract from her second novel, Blow Your House Down, appearing in Granta 7. In 1995 she was awarded the Booker Prize for The Ghost Road and her most recent work, Toby’s Room, was published in 2012.
‘There was a moment of complete silence, one of those inexplicable, simultaneous pauses in conversation that come over groups of people in a crowded room.’
