William Gass (1924–2017) was the author of three collections of short stories, three novels including The Tunnel which won the American Book Award and seven volumes of essays, three of which have won National Book Critics Circle Awards and one of which, The Temple of Texts won the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism.
