Mikal Gilmore was on the staff of Rolling Stone for twenty years. In 1977 his brother, Gary, was executed by firing squad, an event which became the subject of his first book, Shot in the Heart (Anchor), winner of both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 1994. His second book, Night Beat: A Shadow History of Rock and Roll (Picador/Anchor) was published in 1999, and Stories Done: Writings on the 1960’s and its Discontents by Free Press, in 2009.
