Edna O’Brien wrote over twenty works of fiction, along with biographies of James Joyce and Lord Byron. She was the recipient of many awards, including the Irish PEN Lifetime Achievement Award and the Ulysses Medal. She was an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
