Binyavanga Wainaina is a Kenyan author and journalist, a Bard Fellow and the director of the Chinua Achebe Center for African Writers and Artists at Bard College. He is a founding editor of the Kenyan literary magazine Kwani? Wainaina’s first contribution to Granta, ‘How to Write About Africa’, started out as an angry letter to the editor in response to Granta 48: Africa, which, Wainaina writes, ‘was populated by every literary bogeyman that any African has ever known’. It was then included in Granta 92: The View from Africa (Winter 2005). His most recent book is One Day I Will Write About This Place: A Memoir.
