Buchi Emecheta was born in 1944 in Lagos in Nigeria and moved to London with her student husband when she was eighteen. After her marriage broke up when she was twenty-two, and with five children, she began writing. She has a degree in sociology from London University. As well as writing numerous novels, she has written plays for television and radio, and has worked as a librarian, teacher and community worker. She was one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists in 1983.
