Jason Arthur
Associate Publishing Director
I began my publishing career at Routledge, working on the literature list, and from there moved to (Penguin) Random House, where I spent the next twenty-two years (from 2011 as Publisher of William Heinemann and Hutchinson) working on an eclectic mix of fiction and non-fiction. During my time at Penguin Random House, I published Lauren Groff, Richard Powers, Michel Houellebecq, Sathnam Sanghera, Thomas Harris, Nicola Barker, James Ellroy, Tony Judt, Jenni Fagan, Sara Baume, Eley Williams, Noam Chomsky, Casey Cep, Nick Harkaway, Andrea Wulf, Azar Nafisi, Charles Duhigg and Harper Lee, among many others. I joined Granta as Associate Publishing Director in January 2022.
My favourite thing about the job: I get to work with some of the best authors writing today, including Sarah Bernstein, Aidan Cottrell-Boyce, Nick Drnaso, Mariana Enríquez, Leslie Jamison, Margo Jefferson, Megan Kakimoto, Catherine Lacey, Jonathan Lee, Sayaka Murata, Sandra Newman, Sheena Patel, Yoko Tawada and Alejandro Zambra.
A book I reread: anything and everything by Nicola Barker; it is all inventive, playful, exhilarating. She is our bravest combatant in the war against cliché (oh, that we had a literary version of the Victoria Cross!).
