Alan Lightman is Professor of Science and Writing and a senior lecturer in physics at MIT. He has published a range of different kinds of writing – poems, essays, a science column, an interdisciplinary textbook – and a number of books. ‘Einstein in Bern’ (Granta 40) is drawn from Einstein’s Dreams (1991), his first novel, which was published by Pantheon the United States and by Bloomsbury in Britain.
