Jerwood Foundation to Fund Early-Career Photographers at Granta
Jerwood Foundation has awarded a grant of £15,820 to Granta Trust, allowing Granta magazine to commission the work of early-career UK photographers.
Jerwood Photography Commissions will fully fund four photographers to produce work for Granta magazine and granta.com from July 2024 to December 2025. They will gain valuable insight into the process of being commissioned for an in-depth photo essay, have the opportunity to develop their craft, engage with the editorial process, and a platform to showcase their work to a large international audience.
All photography in Granta is accompanied by literary writing – setting it apart from other journals celebrating the visual medium – with many early-career photographers featured in print such as Suzie Howell, Raphaela Rosella and Thomas Duffield going on to see their work published as books, exhibited, or shortlisted for prestigious prizes.
Lara Wardle, Executive Director and Trustee, Jerwood Foundation, said: ‘I am delighted that Jerwood Foundation is embarking on a new partnership with Granta Trust to support the Jerwood Photography Commissions, which will offer vital commissioning opportunities and experience to UK based early-career photographers.’
Thomas Meaney, Editor of Granta, added: ‘Granta and Jerwood Foundation share a mission in supporting and developing excellence in the arts. Editorially we seek out new work by young authors and photographers in the UK and throughout the world, with an emphasis on translation. Granta strives to work with talent from all backgrounds and communities, and to boost the start of their careers – we thank Jerwood Foundation for the chance to feature new talent in contemporary photography.’
Established in 1977 for John Jerwood MC (1918-1991) by Alan Grieve CBE, Jerwood Foundation supports excellence and emerging talent in the arts in the UK and has to date donated over £110 million. In 2023 the Foundation merged with Jerwood Charity (Jerwood Arts) and Alan Grieve was appointed Chairman Emeritus and Rupert Tyler appointed Chairman. The organisation is led by Lara Wardle, Executive Director and Trustee.
