Esther Rutter to speak at Women‘s Institute, Denman
Esther Rutter, author of This Golden Fleece will give a talk at Women's Institute, Denman, Oxfordshire on Friday 21 February 2020 at 3 p.m.This Golden Fleece traces the history of wool and knitting throughout the British Isles. Each chapter follows the creation of a particular garment pertinent to Britain’s craft culture, from protest knitting to fishermen’s jumpers, from funeral stockings to knitted swimwear. Through these garments Rutter examines the places and people that created them, working in the little-known stories of knitters from Shetland to the Channel Islands, from Wales to East Anglia. In today’s knitwear industries, she finds tradition and innovation intermingling. She also seeks to ‘myth bust’ commonly held assumptions and stories about knitting, and examines the role of knitting in the creativity of writers including Virginia Woolf and Lytton Strachey.
